Sie werden mit einem Blick auf die offizielle Figurenliste bemerken, dass hier eigentlich die Figuren wrong way thar oder slip the clutch nach der letzen Figur folgen sollten. Das verschieben wir auf die nächste Lektion, weil die Tänzer sonst von der Dreherei schwindlig werden und auch mal wieder in anderen Formationen tanzen sollen.

box the gnat (bitte nicht übersetzen. Diese Wörter sind aus einem traditionellen Reim abgeleitet und ergeben keinen Sinn)

box the gnat kann nur in boy / girl Konstellation getanzt werden. Wer soll bei boy / boy oder girl / girl Konstellation mit dem Rücken drehen? Das geht nicht!

Die Figur wird auch nur mit der rechten Handverbindung getanzt! Ein left box the gnat wäre nur ein "gag" und ist nicht standardisiert. Diese Variation wurde 'in alten Zeiten' swat the flea oder box the flea genannt und ist nicht mehr aktuell.

box the gnat ist beliebt und attraktiv, weil man damit sehr schnell die Richtung wechseln und eine sashayed Position aufheben kann.

Erklären Sie die Figur am besten in der Pause und zeigen Sie sie mit Ihrer(m) Partner(in) mehrmals langsam vor. Fassen Sie sich ganz locker gegenseitig wie handshake, aber nur an den Fingerspitzen, ziehen damit leicht an, drehen wie gewohnt und wechseln am Scheitelpunkt den gegenseitigen Griff. Weisen Sie darauf hin, dass die Hände deutlich über Kopfhöhe erhoben werden. Weisen Sie auch darauf hin, dass man sich nicht mit den gebeugten Fingern ineinander krallt!

box the gnat tanzt man immer mit der Person gegenüber d.h. facing. Erklären Sie auch, dass man sich danach in der Regel wieder an den rechten Händen wie zuvor fasst, um eine Folgefigur zu tanzen. Soll das nicht sein, wird der Caller ansagen - drop your hands = Hände herunternehmen.

Nach dem square up lassen Sie die Tanzpartner mehrmals box the gnat miteinander üben.

Die Tänzer geben sich die rechte Hand und heben diese Handverbindung über Kopfhöhe. Ohne loszulassen vollführt die Dame unter diesem Bogen durch einen Schritt vorwärts einen U turn back nach links, während der Herr vorwärts um die sich drehende Dame geht und einen U turn back nach rechts ausführt. Die Tänzer stehen sich wieder gegenüber, haben jedoch die Plätze getauscht. Die rechten Hände bleiben danach in der Regel gefasst. Tipp: Die Handverbindung nur locker festhalten, und die Drehung durch leichtes Ziehen einleiten.

Jetzt ist es wieder an der Zeit, mit wrong way grand ein Lücke ausgelassener Figuren aus der Liste zu schließen. Nach box the gnat mit dem/der Partner(in) bleiben die rechten Hände gefasst und ein right and left grand kann den wrong way = 'falschen' Weg getanzt werden, d.h. gegen die gewohnte Tanzrichtung.

Sehr beliebt ist box the gnat in Verbindung mit right and left thru, square thru oder pull by, um eine sashayed Position schnell aufzuheben. So kommt diese Figur nicht nur in der Kreisformation zu Anwendung, sondern dient hauptsächlich als Lösung im normalen Figurenablauf. Dabei wird box the gnat mit den möglichen Folgefiguren zusammenhängend gecallt.
